BRAINERD — A woman was found dead and a man was arrested after law enforcement conducted a welfare check Thursday morning, April 28, at a residence north of Brainerd.
Crow Wing County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the house, on Smith Road near the Legionville Road intersection in Unorganized Territory, about 8 a.m. Upon arrival, they found a woman dead inside the residence. The man was arrested at the scene and is being held at the Crow Wing County Jail pending formal criminal charges from the Crow Wing County Attorney’s Office.
Further information, including the name of the victim and suspect and other details about the investigation, was not released Thursday afternoon.
Crow Wing County Sheriff Scott Goddard said the victim and suspect were known to each other.
“We know he had local ties,” Goddard said of the suspect. Goddard also said he does not believe there is any danger to the public at this time.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting the sheriff’s office with the investigation.
Smith Road will remain closed to through traffic at Legionville Road until the BCA finishes up the investigation. Goddard believed they would have the road open by Friday morning.

Several vehicles were parked outside the residence but no activity was visible inside the home. Two Crow Wing County squad cars sat at the driveway entrance. Additional squad cars began arriving on scene around 10 a.m.

Starting at Legionville Road, the Crow Wing County Sheriff closed about 300 yards of Smith Road as they awaited the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
