The Bemidji High swim team went 1-3 in the final relay Tuesday to overcome a four point deficit and shade Duluth East 94-92 in the Greyhounds pool.

The meet figured to be far closer than last year's 108-62 Jacks romp at Bemidji and was.

The lead changed hands six times and was tied on two other occasions until Bemidji pulled out the win.

It ended the Jacks dual meet season at 6-2. They now begin their taper for the sectional at Bemidji Feb. 23-24

The Hounds went 1-3 in the medley to take a 10-4 lead, only to lose it as Bemidji went 1-2-3 with Paul Voss, Matt Wilcox and Nick Lee in the 200 free.

Back came East to go 1-3-4 in the I. M. and move to a 24-22 lead which became a tie when Bemidji went 2-3-4 in the 50 led by Josh Faecke.

East swept the diving to take a 44-34 lead and kept it as Tyler Verry led a 1-4 finish in the fly, his second win of the meet.

Bemidji came back with a 1-3-4 in the 100 free behind Jared Vanasse to trail by four and went ahead again 66-60 when Wilcox, Tucker Asper and Lee went 1-2-3 in the 500.

East tied it again with a 1-3 in the 200 free relay beating Bemidji by three seconds.

The home team took a two point lead in the backstroke where David Lopez won his second event and four points in the breaststroke despite a win by Blake Collison.

That left it up to the final relays. And Bemidji responded with Abe Cummings, Mike Arnold, Vanasse and Lee winning in 3:36.56 by six seconds over the top Hounds team and Voss, Wilcox, Greg Moriarty and Asper taking third by 18 over the second East foursome which was DQ'd and more than a minute over the third East unit which counted.
