BEMIDJI — Bemidji Area Schools will remain closed for all scheduled activities and facility usage Wednesday through Friday in response to COVID cases and other illnesses affecting staffing levels across the district.

Following an emergency COVID closure day for Tuesday, Jan. 18, the district came to the decision to extend the closure due to guidance from the Minnesota Department of Health and Sanford Health.

“District employees will spend the next three days preparing for a potential move to distance learning and distributing devices to students who will need them,” Superintendent Tim Lutz said in a statement.

An official determination regarding any more distance learning days will be made by Friday. This decision will include whether or not further distance learning is needed, which grade levels may be impacted and what time period that distance learning would be in effect.

The district would prioritize in-person learning for elementary students based on staffing capacity if distance learning is extended.

Lutz continued, asking for assistance in helping the district remain in an in-person learning model.

“Limiting the potential exposure of you and your family during the next few days will be critical. Expanding the number of staff and students who are fully vaccinated will also have a significant impact on our ability to keep students in school for in-person learning,” Lutz said.
