Grass-roots government day is coming up on March 14. That is, for township residents throughout Minnesota.
On that day, townships will elect town board supervisors and in some townships, clerks or treasurers will be elected. Also following the closing of the polls at 8 p.m., the annual meeting of the townships will get under way, at which time the township residents in attendance will have the opportunity to vote on various issues of interest to their township and perhaps most importantly, will vote to establish the budget for their township for 2007. Townships are the only place in our great nation where the budget is established directly by the electorate. What an opportunity! (No excuse for budget deficits in townships.)
Here in Bemidji Township, we will be electing two town board members to three-year terms. The polls are open for voting from 5 to 8 p.m. Then at 8:15 p.m., the annual meeting will be called to order by the town clerk, a moderator will be chosen by those present to lead the meeting through the various reports and the 2007 budget will be set.
I urge all township residents to attend their township's annual meeting and to take part in this great Minnesota "grass-roots government" on March 14.
