Our country is in such a mess that it is difficult to know where to start in proposing ideas that will lift us back up, but I want to offer some starter ideas for Minnesota.
1. A total return to paper ballots. The existing system of voting machines is so corrupt that it should be junked wholesale.
2. Total public financing of all political campaigns in the state. This would cost each of us about $10 per year, but the savings in better products, politics that are more honest, etc., would easily amount to $2,500 per year per person! This would be the bargain of the century.
3. We should set up a state-run medical insurance program that would cover all expenses for everyone, including medical treatment, hospitalization, rest home care, dental care, prescriptions, etc. We could achieve enormous savings, perhaps as much as 50 percent, by drastically reducing administrative costs of present programs.
We have all very serious problems looming on the horizon, such as the coming collapse of the economy, but we can get started now on these less serious matters.
