In recent weeks we at St. Cloud State University have come together as a community out of concern and support for those affected by bias-motivated incidents that have occurred on our campus, including several swastika drawings. Because we have been dealing with these incidents in an open and decisive manner, our response has understandably attracted analysis, criticism and praise, as well as considerable media attention.
While most every campus and community grapples with these same issues, we have chosen to unite against the hate, ignorance, immaturity and/or lack of understanding they represent. We've candidly communicated these incidents to our campus and are working closely with St. Cloud police in investigating them, and we will continue to do so. Our students have come together to talk about our standards and values as a community, and to help reach those who just don't get it.
I have been most heartened that not a small number of students and others have said they feel safer because of unity and support. Many students and faculty of color have spoken up and said this is their campus and they're here to stay. They are here to give or get a good education and are determined to lift up their voices to say they choose to be at this university where hateful behavior is dealt with openly and honestly.
As a diverse community we have created opportunities for education and dialog in our community about issues that matter to us all. I might add that despite the attention that has been given these incidents, the number of applications to St. Cloud State and the number of new entering students has increased in all demographic categories -- including students of color.
We don't claim to have all the answers at St. Cloud State University. But we will keep questioning and examining possible solutions. And we will unapologetically and loudly keep standing together against all forms of discrimination and bias. St. Cloud State University must be a place where people from all races, religions and traditions can be assured they are welcome to experience all the richness of our learning community.
