The passage of the Clean Energy Act will not only serve as a starting point for addressing global warming by promoting renewable and alternative fuels, as pointed out in your editorial. These funds could also save consumers money on their energy bills with incentives for energy-efficient appliances, buildings and equipment, and enable more consumers to purchase gas-saving hybrid cars and trucks.

In addition, by investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency we can create more jobs. In fact, electricity produced from renewable energy sources like wind and solar creates twice as many jobs as generating the same amount of electricity with fossil fuels.

Whether it's because we might lose the moose and the polar bear, or because we have an opportunity to revitalize our rural economies, America needs a new direction on energy policy. With the passage of the Clean Energy Act of 2007, Congress has sent a clear message that they are ready to start solving our energy problems. We applaud U.S. Rep. Peterson, who has shown a real commitment to increasing our use of homegrown energy sources, for supporting this critical step toward a new energy future.
