A 10-year-old boy noticed that something wasn't right with his pet rabbit's eye. He put the animal in the front basket of his bicycle and took off in a concerned hurry on a 3-mile trip to the veterinarian. The kid arrived at the building, not knowing at his age that appointments to professional offices should be made in advance. The vet had him come right in with no waiting to look at the animal's ailment. The good doctor examined the animal, put salve on the afflicted eye and gave the kid some extra salve to take with him for later use.

The veterinarian was Dr. Carl Seemann, and the boy was me. From that period in time, I continued to live in Bemidji for 20 more years until I remorsefully moved from the area 22 years ago. When I come home to Minnesota and drive past his practice, his kindness extended that long-ago day comes back to mind. Also, to date I have yet to receive his bill.
