BEMIDJI -- National-touring troubadour Brian Laidlaw will offer a public songwriting workshop, open to writers of all ages and ability levels Friday at the Rail River Folk School, 303 Railroad St. SW.

After the workshop, there will be a performance featuring Laidlaw and bandmate Ashley Hanson. The workshop will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the concert at 7:30 p.m.

During the workshop, Laidlaw will begin by describing the ways that songwriters draw inspiration from day-to-day life, and then share tricks and formulas that help transform an initial idea into a finished song. Laidlaw and Hanson are founding members of the Twin-Cities- based folk ensemble “The Family Trade,” whose single ‘Jeremiad’ was recently released by Hymie’s Vintage Records.
