James R. Montgomery, 72, of Hibbing, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at his home in Hibbing.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008, at the Salvation Army Chapel in Hibbing. The Rev. Rod Tuomi officiated. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Burial will be in the Bearville Township Cemetery. The Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing assisted the family with arrangements.

He was born June 30, 1935, to Ronald A. and Louise A. Montgomery in Minneapolis. He was a resident of Hibbing for the past 31 years. He made his career in the U.S. Armed Forces, serving over 21 years of service in the Air Force. After his time in the military, he owned and operated Monty's Appliance Repair in Hibbing. He loved fixing things and tinkering. He was a member of the Hibbing Christian Assembly Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially duck hunting, and loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Montgomery of Hibbing; sons, Bryan J. (Susan) Montgomery of Hibbing, David Neil (Patricia) Montgomery of Aurora, Minn., and Jacob A. (Crissy) Montgomery of Coon Rapids, Minn.; daughters, Linda Walker of Kelly Lake, Minn., Ronda (Bob) Fridlund of Hibbing, Laura (Mark) Swehla of Pillager, Minn., and Petra (Charles) Steaderman and Joann Montgomery, both of Burnsville, Minn.; sister, Judith (Wallace) Lamen of Bemidji; 23 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Gayle Montgomery; and one great-grandchild.
