Jacks' boys score 136 points for indoor win

The Bemidji High boys track team captured its first title of the year Thursday, winning the 11th annual Paul Bunyan Invitational at BSU.

The second of the two major meets attracted only six teams.

Bemidji won with 136 points to 118 for two-time defending champion DGF and marked the second title for the Jacks in meet history. The last came in 2001.

Grand Rapids trailed the Rebels by two points to take third with Fertile, Bagley/Fosston and Crookston trailing.

Bemidji scored steadily all day opening with a win in the 4 x 8 relay and closing with a win in the 4 x 4.

Waylon Manske, Nick Hudson, Derek Smith and James Powell won the 4 x 8. Jake Sorby, Manske, Smith and Dan Sorby won the 4 x 4.

Dan Sorby also won the 55 hurdles and Manske took the 1600 for the other two Bemidji victories.

Seconds went to Grant Stevens in the hurdles, Jake Sorby in the 400, Smith in the 800, Hudson in the 1600, Tristan Dockendorf in the pole vault and Casey Orgon in the shot.

Taking third were Kyle Batchelder in the 55 and the 4 x 2 relay of Jon Walberg, John Thompson, Steve Guilfoile and Kyle Nohre.

In fourth came Batchelder in the 200, Powell in the 800 and Jared Davis in the 1600.

Taking fifth were Guilfoile in the 200, Jake Brown in the 3200 Jake Sorby in the high jump, and Alex Muller in the pole vault.

In sixth were Davis in the 3200 and Stevens in the long jump while Lance Richter in the 800 and Nohre in the high jump were eighth.

Omar Longoria of DGF repeated as MVP taking the 55, 200 and long jump and running a leg on the winning 4 x 2 relay.

Bagley/Fosston was led by Drew Hayes' second in the 55, Anton Goss' second in the 200, and Brandon Dyrdahl's second in the high jump.

The final event of the indoor season is Tuesday, the Little Amik-II which has attracted 25 or more teams.

Coach John Deden plans to bypass that meet with his JV and spend the day practicing.
