Herman Pater, 94, of Blackduck, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, in a vehicular accident near Blackduck.

A private family service will be held at a later date. The Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home in Bemidji assisted the family with arrangements.

He was born Feb. 27, 1914, to Elbert and Rijkje (Lagerwey) Pater in Sheldon, Iowa. In 1944, he moved to Grand Rapids, Minn. In 1946, he moved to Blackduck, and he lived there the rest of his life. He worked as a carpenter, logger and scrap dealer. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, cutting firewood and collecting John Deere tractors.

He is survived by his daughters, Velma Neeley of Ontario, Calif., Elsie Pater of Cook, Minn., Rebecca (Gary) Johnson of Farmington, N.M., and Laura (Kevin Provo) Pater of Maple Lake, Minn.; sons, Richard B. (Shirley) Pater of Blackduck and Norman (Gayle) Pater of Greenbrier, Tenn.; step-daughters, Gayle (Norman) Pater of Greenbrier, Debra (Duane) Watkins of Shevlin, Kathy (Bob) Pond of Pinewood, April (Bill) Cunningham of Hesperia, Mich., and Joy (Greg) Barnes of Olive Branch, Miss.; step-son, John Smith, of Kingsville, Mo.; sister, Ida McMon of Milford, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, eight brothers, one stepdaughter and two grandchildren.
