BEMIDJI-Greater Bemidji plans a public listening session for 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, on a proposed local sports commission.

The meeting will be held at the Mayflower Building, 102 First St. W in downtown Bemidji.

According to a release, the focus of the meeting will be seeking input on the proposed Greater Bemidji Sports Commission.

Greater Bemidji staff will share information on the proposed commission, including its organizational structure, mission, goals and staffing plan, the release said. Also, details will be shared on how the proposed commission would support existing sport organizations and booster clubs, as well as sports facilities in the region, including the new Sanford Family Sports and Wellness Complex, proposed to be built on the Sanford Health campus in Bemidji.

"I want to really encourage the public to stop and share ideas on the proposed Sports Commission," said Greater Bemidji Executive Director Dave Hengel in the release.

"Greater Bemidji feels strongly that the commission will have a tremendous impact on the region's economy, and will provide a means to overcome the barriers that prevent youth and families from accessing sports and family recreational opportunities."

Hengel said Greater Bemidj's first open house about the Sports and Wellness Complex was well attended and said he hopes for a similar turnout on Thursday. Greater Bemidji is the region's economic development organization. More information on Greater Bemidji can be found at www.greaterbemidji.com .
