Gerald "Jerry" LeRoy Whitney, 65, of Bemidji, died on Monday, March 12, 2007, at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at First Lutheran Church in Bemidji with Rev. James Darchuk officiating. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. The Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home of Bemidji assisted the family with arrangements.
Honorary pallbearers will be his friends and co-workers from Wintersteen Trucking and Prairie Lines Inc.
He was born on Aug. 9, 1941, to Clarence and Helen (Elliott) Whitney, in Jamestown, N.D. He was raised, attended school and graduated from high school in Montpelier, N.D. He attended Wahpeton School of Science in Wahpeton, N.D. He lived and worked in Westminister, Calif., from 1961-1963. He then served in Alaska in the U.S. Army from 1963-1965. He remained in Alaska and worked on the North Slope until 1971 when he moved to Bemidji. He was a partner with Keith Johanneson in the Inverness Trucking Company until 1977 when the business was sold. He married Carlyn Ward on Sept. 11, 1976, in Bemidji. In 1977, he began working for Wintersteen Trucking and worked there until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Bemidji Eagles and First Lutheran Church. He enjoyed drag racing and was part of the pit crew for Al Gavlovski. He liked his work as a truck driver and the travel it afforded him. He was family oriented and enjoyed the time he spent with his granddaughter.
He is survived by his wife of Bemidji; daughter, Christy (Dave) Harvey of Becida; son, Ryan Whitney of Bemidji; a granddaughter; mother of Jamestown, N.D.; and sister, Darlene (Lloyd) Hurley of Bemidji.
He was preceded in death by his father.
