George O. Sletten, 85

George O. Sletten, 85, of Underwood, formerly of Bemidji, died on Thursday, March 8, 2007, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Sverdrup Lutheran Church in Underwood with Rev. Scott Mikkelson officiating.

George O. Sletten, 85, of Underwood, formerly of Bemidji, died on Thursday, March 8, 2007, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Sverdrup Lutheran Church in Underwood with Rev. Scott Mikkelson officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service today at the church. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Greenwood Cemetery in Bemidji. The Olson Funeral Home of Fergus Falls assisted the family with arrangements.

He was born on April 10, 1921, to Ole and Sylvia (Peters) Sletten, in Bemidji. He was baptized at Aardahl Lutheran Church in Bemidji. He was a veteran of World War II, serving from July 1942 until December 1945. On June 19, 1948, he married Veona Harju in Deer River, Minn. In 1950, he graduated from Rasmussen Business School in St. Paul and took a job with a mining company in Nashwauk, Minn., before briefly moving to Clarkston, Wash., to work for the Potlatch Company. From 1958 to 1983, he worked at Lakehead Pipeline in Deer River. In 1993, they moved to the Underwood area, to be near their two grandchildren and attend all of their school activities.

He enjoyed golfing, doing yard work and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of Underwood; son, Gary (Ingrid) Sletten of Underwood; two grandchildren; brothers, Ernie (Edna) Sletten of Quincey, Wash., and Arthur (Avis) Sletten of Bemidji; sisters, Arvella Skarohlid of Princeton, Minn., Myrtle (Ed) Risland of Bemidji and Betty (Merton) Larsen of Bemidji; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Albert.
