Funeral scheduled for Fosston soldier killed in Afghanistan

Sgt, Matthew Harmon, 29, of Fosston, was killed in an IED explosion in Afghanistan Aug. 14 while his unit was recovering a vehicle. His funeral is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in Fosston High School.

His remains will be flown into the Bemidji Regional Airport Friday morning. An honor guard is scheduled to escort the funeral party to Fosston.

Harmon was deployed to Afghanistan for the first time about one month ago. He served two previous tours in Iraq.

Harmon joined the Minnesota National Guard as a senior in high school in 1999 and joined the active Army in 2004.

Harmon is survived by his wife, Nicole; children, Danika, Vincent, and Elsie; parents, Tom and Irene Harmon of Lengby; sister, Melissa (Perry) Syverson of Glyndon, Minn.; brothers, Dean Harmon of Bemidji and Mark Harmon of Lengby; and grandparents, Mary Lou Harmon of Lengby and Nancy and Raymond Sletten of Bemidji.
