BEMIDJI-The South Shore of Lake Bemidji will look like a mini shopping district this summer, as a new flea market is set to open just outside the Sanford Center.

As part of an initiative to build more community events, Sanford Center staff have organized the Lakeside Flea Market, scheduled to be held on the third Tuesday in June, July and August. The new market will take up space at the facility's parking lot, with each vendor allowed two parking spaces.

"We've been trying to do more home-grown events," Sanford Center Marketing Manager Evelyn Halvorson said. "The first one of those was the Women's Expo. This year, we're having the Women's Expo again, and we're adding the flea market. In this day and age of re-use, DIY (do-it-yourself) and Pinterest, a flea market seemed like a natural fit with our home-grown events."

The market will be open those Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. For vendors, the cost is $30 with set-up starting at 6 a.m. Spaces for the market are first come, first serve.

"We have one vendor already signed up for the whole summer who's going to be bringing lawn art and new household items," Halvorson said. "We're really hoping to have an eclectic look with all of our vendors."

According to Halvorson, the Sanford Center is dedicating the section of its parking lot closest to the front of its facility for vendors.

To be a vendor at the market, those interested can contact the Sanford Center at (218) 441-4004.
