BEMIDJI -- In honor of Sesame Street's 50th Anniversary, J.W. Smith Elementary School hosted a celebration day to kick off Thanksgiving break.

Faculty and staff came up with a variety of activities for students throughout the day that centered around Sesame Street, while still completing their academic requirements, organizers said.

Each teacher wore a shirt with their favorite Sesame Street character on it, and their students wore corresponding colored shirts to match.

Bemidji Area Schools Superintendent Tim Lutz, along with volunteers from the Bemidji Fire Department and the Bemidji Police Department, came and read to students throughout the day.

To wrap things up, Corey Medina and Brothers took the stage in the auditorium to perform for students and their parents.
