Area students advance to state math competition

Multiple local students will advance to state after placing at the Mathcounts Regional Math Competition, which was held at Northland Community College in Thief River Falls on Feb. 9.

Nine teams, consisting of 64 individuals, competed. St. Philip's of Bemidji was first among all schools, opening the door for the school to go to state. Individuals on the St. Philip's team are Ashley Maki, Paul Louvar, Sam Mutnansky, and Charlie McCalip. Bemidji Middle School took second place among the large schools. 

Individuals going to state who were not on the winning team are Nick Ratio and Grace Werner of Bemidji Middle School.

The state meet will be held in Plymouth on March 9-10.

The top ten individuals earning trophies during the Regional Math Competition were Ashley Maki of St. Phillips, Nick Rautio of Bemidji Middle school, Niharika Gottipati of Franklin Middle School, Grace Werner of Bemidji Middle School, Annika Christensen of Franklin Middle School, Will Termont of Bemidji Middle school, Casey Hiller of Bemidji Middle School, Ridge Fisher of Bemidji Middle School, Brandon Ristad of Kittson Central and Cora Gererdes of Bemidji Middle School.
