The Duluth East Greyhounds outgunned Bemidji's Lumberjacks 83-71 Tuesday night in a shootout at the BHS field house.

The small turnout witnessed an interesting game with two hot shooting teams going at one another from the start.

Unfortunately, the visitors had too many guns for Bemidji to contain though the Jacks turned in one of their better games of the year.

The 71 points was the best total in the past eight starts and the third best of the year. It was bettered only in the wins over Albany and Sauk Rapids.

Bemidji never led but stayed close until the final minutes of play when the Hounds widened a six-point lead to 12.

They showed a balanced attack with freshman Dynami Starks hitting 21, Sean Mayberry 19, Ryan Shea 18 and Keaton Hason 10.

Bemidji also had four in double figures with Andrew Hengel netting 15, Tanner Baker 14, Drew Baker 13 and Alex Muller 11.

For those who like long range bombing there was lots of action with each team getting eight treys. Hengel led the way with five and Muller had three for Bemidji. Duluth divided its eight among four shooters with Starks getting three.

It was a game of the Hounds moving ahead and Bemidji fighting back.

Two quick treys staked East to an 8-1 lead which it expanded to 14-4 at the four minute mark.

Bemidji fought back behind three treys to close to 21-19 near the midpoint and was still within reach at 32-26 when the visitors ran eight unanswered points to move ahead by 14.

But Bemidji closed the half with a run of nine ending with Hengel's third trey and left the court down only 42-37.

It was more of the same in the second half with the Jacks cutting the lead to 45-42 early and 67-61 with six minutes remaining.

But back to back treys by Shea and Andy Kilpo upped the margin to 12 and the Jacks never made a serious run thereafter.

The Hounds were able to contain Bemidji's big front line holding Doug Bender, Chris Marty and David Sand to a combined 10 points and six rebounds.

Bemidji held a 35-28 lead off the boards with Drew Baker cleaning seven. Shea's nine was East's top.

Bemidji, as usual, hurt its chances with 25 turnovers, 15 in the first half when it might have moved ahead with better ball handling. It also missed 10 of 19 free throws, several the front ends of bonus shots.

East made 19 of its 22, hitting 10-13 in the second half.

"I thought we had good production from the Baker twins and were able to generate an outside attack," said coach Jeff Brown. "But we have to get more production inside to beat good teams."

Things should get no easier Saturday when the Jack head to Apollo for an afternoon game, the second of a double header with the girls playing the opener.

Bemidji dropped to 5-17 with the setback. East rose to 13-8, most of its setbacks to Twin Cities opposition.

The win lifts the B Team to 5-17.

It dropped its Saturday clash at Alexandria 56-37 with Rude's nine points high.
