U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton will be in Bemidji on Monday to present an Award of Excellence in Education to the Bemidji School District.

The Minnesota DFLer created the award to publicly recognize "the thousands of individual success stories that occur in Minnesota schools each day," according to a statement from Dayton's office.

His latest tour of awards finds him Monday in Park Rapids and Bemidji.

He will present an award at 10:30 a.m. at Century Elementary School in Park Rapids, and then will present the Bemidji School District award at 1 p.m. at Bemidji High School.

In presentations Monday and Tuesday, Dayton will give Awards of Excellence in Education to Century Elementary, Bemidji School District, Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School in Duluth, Lowell Elementary and Music Magnet School in Duluth, Duluth East High School, and Washington Elementary School in Cloquet.

Dayton has presented the Award for Excellence in Education to 25 schools and school districts throughout Minnesota this year.

Public and private schools, school districts and academic programs throughout the state are eligible to be honored for going above and beyond expectations for educating students, improving scholastic performance and enriching young lives, the statement said.

Winners receive an official copy of a congratulatory statement by Dayton, from the Congressional Record, along with an American flag that has flown above the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The Award for Excellence in Education is noncompetitive; all schools that are nominated and that exceed expectations for providing quality education will receive the award, said the statement.

Nominations can be made at any time during the school year, by any individual or group. Parents, students, teachers, school administrators and school board members all may submit nominations. Awards will be given continuously throughout the school year.
