ST. PAUL - A 30-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman have been charged after a man rode off on a police Segway and a woman stole a police PepperBall gun, charges filed Thursday, March 7, said.
During a call, the officers removed their keys from the Segways, which are used for patrolling in the Skyway, when they went to a building on Tuesday about 9:45 a.m.
Surveillance video showed a man, later identified as 30-year-old Tyrese Desean Johnson, riding the Segway over a Skyway ramp, according to a criminal complaint.
A Segway is only operable for a short distance without a key in it, a St. Paul police spokesman said. Officers then discovered a PepperBall gun was missing from the gear pouch.
The surveillance video showed a woman with Johnson took the PepperBall launcher, which was loaded, on Tuesday morning, according to a police report.
Police soon found Johnson and Chelise Desiree Brown, 23, at Union Depot in downtown St. Paul.
Police arrested Brown, whom the St. Paul City Attorney’s office charged Thursday with gross misdemeanor theft. The Ramsey County attorney’s office charged Johnson with felony theft due to the Segway’s value.
Locked cases are being considered for the PepperBall equipment, police said.
