Moorhead man arrested after stealing car, leading early morning chase into Fargo
MOORHEAD — A 26-year-old Moorhead man was being held Saturday, Jan. 27, in Cass County Jail after he allegedly stole a vehicle from an acquaintance and led police on an early morning chase through Moorhead and Fargo.
The city reported that a Moorhead Police officer stopped a vehicle at 12:11 a.m. Saturday near Romkey Park, 900 19th St. S. The officer identified the driver and passenger and returned to his squad car to check their driving status and warrants, discovering the passenger had an outstanding warrant for gross misdemeanor DWI.
According to a news release, the passenger forced the other occupant, the driver and owner, out of the vehicle and sped off as officers approached a second time.
The pursuit went south on 20th Street to Interstate 94, where it continued west into Fargo and exited the interstate onto South University Drive before ending with the driver crashing into a snowbank in the 1300 block of Fargo's 15th Street South.
The Minnesota State Patrol assisted in the chase, and Fargo Police assisted in the arrest. A news release said the owner of the vehicle knew the suspect, who was identified by authorities as Nathan Smith, but he wanted Smith charged with stealing his vehicle.
Smith was being held Saturday on six charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, robbery, fleeing in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, driving after revocation and no seat belt. No further information was released Saturday.
