Charles "Bubs" Harper, 70, of Cass Lake, died on Friday, March 17, 2006, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minn., of complications resulting from a car accident near Floodwood, Minn.

Charles "Bubs" Harper, 70, of Cass Lake, died on Friday, March 17, 2006, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minn., of complications resulting from a car accident near Floodwood, Minn.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Cass Lake with Rev. Harold Eaglebull and Rev. John Rock officiating. A visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at the Cass Lake Veteran's Memorial Building. A wake service will begin at 7 p.m. and will continue until the time of the service on Wednesday. Burial will be in Onigum Episcopal Cemetery in Onigum. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Cass Lake assisted the family with arrangements.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kent Beaulieu, George Jenkins, Stan Howard, Curtis Buckanaga, Don Fairbanks, Don Finn Sr., Al Thunder, Tim Lindgren, Joe Thunder, and all of his co-workers at the Palace Casino and Hotel.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Harper, Derrick Harper, Kerry Harper, Marlin Harper, Dave Harper and Roger Dale Harper.

He was born on Oct. 7, 1935, to John Sr. and Mattie (Soreyes) Harper, in Onigum. He was raised and educated in Cass Lake. He served in the U.S. Army as a young man. When he was discharged he moved to Los Angeles, Calif., for a few years. He spent time in Denver, Colo. and Minneapolis, before returning to Cass Lake in 1982. He started working for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe that year and has done so until the accident, most recently at the Palace Casino and Hotel.

He enjoyed traveling, visiting, tinkering with small engines, motors, and electronics, reading, fishing and was an active sports booster. He was a member of the Jack Kimball American Legion Post No. 284 of Cass Lake.

He is survived by his daughters, Pamela Mathews of Cuba, Mo., and Janet Thunder of Minneapolis; son, Ronnie Harper of Minneapolis; brothers, Wellington Harper of Cass Lake, Francis (Julie) Harper of White Bear Lake, Minn., Dennis (Judy) Harper of Cass Lake, Henry Harper of Cass Lake and Colin (Janice) Harper of Cass Lake; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roger Harper and John Harper Jr.; and daughter, Becky Thunder.
