BEMIDJI -- A BSU program that helps students at particular risk of dropping out will continue through 2021, thanks in part to a grant announced Monday by the university.

BSU’s TRIO/Student Support Services programs will receive more than $2 million -- about $431,000 per year -- from the Department of Education beginning in 2016. The programs are designed to improve retention and graduation rates among first-generation or low-income college students, and students with disabilities.

Eligible learners at no cost can participate in the programs, which include advising, one-on-one tutoring and skills development courses.

According to a BSU news release, the grant allows the university to create a new summer-held developmental math class intended to prepare students for college-level coursework.

BSU’s TRIO program is one of 968 such projects out of nearly 1,500 that the Department of Education this year has decided to fund, the release said.
