A memorial service will be held Thursday afternoon for a Bemidji State University student who died March 2 in an accidental drowning in Australia.
The memorial service for Zach Mellang will be held from 3-4 p.m. in the Beaux Arts Ballroom on the BSU campus.
According to a BSU statement, Mellang was student teaching in Lorne, Australia, through the Australia Student Teaching Program, a collaboration between BSU and the University of Minnesota Morris. The 22-year-old from Lutsen, Minn., was teaching K-12 art, and had been in Australia since late January.
The memorial service is being coordinated through BSU Campus Ministry, where Mellang was involved as a student volunteer, and the BSU Department of Residential Life, where he worked for three years.
"The Bemidji State University community is saddened by the news of this accidental death," BSU President Jon Quistgaard said in the statement. "Zach was very active on campus, and well known through his work in the residence halls and association with campus organizations. Bemidji State extends our deepest sympathy to his family."
