Bert Orben David Good, Indian name Makwa, which means bear, 87, of rural Trail, Minn., died Sunday, March 9, 2008, at the Red Lake Hospital in Red Lake.

Bert Orben David Good, Indian name Makwa, which means bear, 87, of rural Trail, Minn., died Sunday, March 9, 2008, at the Red Lake Hospital in Red Lake.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Trail with the Rev. Joseph Abrahamson officiating. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m., with an 8:30 p.m. prayer service, Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, Minn., and one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Pallbearers will be Micheal Good, Quinten Good, Roger Good, Kirk Good, Roger Lee Chaboyea, Ron Free and Tyler Good.

Military honors will be provided by the Red Lake Nation Honor Guard and Trail Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was born Sept. 17, 1920, to Gaywanemequot "Wayne" and Hilma (Mostrom) Good in Neptune, Minn., along the Red Lake River at his family's home. He is an enrolled member of the Red Lake Nation. He attended school at the Red Lake Government Boarding School and the Little Oak Country School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European, African and Middle Eastern campaigns. During his time in the Army, he earned six medals including the Bronze Star (Battle of the Bulge), Good Conduct, American Campaign, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign, World War II Victory and Honorable Service World War II. He served under General Patton in the "Lucky 7th" Hell on Wheels Seventh Armored Division, 31st Battalion in C Company as a tank commander. He married Irene June Hanson on Sept. 15, 1947. They had 12 children. He spent his life as a logger, hunter, trapper and farmer along the Red Lake River, the land he loved. He was a skilled storyteller, recalling each incident with great detail. He was well known and respected by many people. He was a very patriotic man.

He is survived by his sons, Quinten (Cathy) Good of Trail, Roger (Lori) Good of Gully and Kirk (Natalie) Good of Wasilla, Ala.; daughters, Patricia Good of Roseville, Minn., Karen Good of Trail, Ramona Good of Sioux City, Iowa, Leona Good of Lincoln, Neb., Valerie (Ron) Free of Billings, Mont., Bonny (Chuck) Harris of Hillsboro, Ore., Dawn ( Brandon) Smith of Liberty Lake, Wash., and Diane (Steve) Collins of Lincoln; brother, Archie (Vivian) Wilson of Blythe, Calif.; sister, Helen Brozio of New Port Richey, Fla.; 29 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Yvonne Good; siblings, Bertha Good, Joseph Good, William Good, Myrtle Good, James Good, Ella Dahlen Englund; and two grandchildren.
