BEMIDJI-The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra will host the second performance of the national premiere as the finale of the 2019-2020 season on Sunday, April 28.

"Symphony This Will Be Our Reply" is composed by Lucas Richman, and Sunday's performance will include the Bemidji Chorale, Bemidji Choir and the Park Rapids Chorale. The concert will be held at 3 p.m. in the Bemidji High School auditorium, 2900 Division St. W.

Richman will speak briefly prior to the concert, and host a post-concert discussion immediately following the performance.

In celebration of the Leonard Bernstein Centenary (August 25, 2018), Richman received permission from the Leonard Bernstein Office to create a new work for chorus and orchestra inspired by the speech Bernstein delivered to the United Jewish Fund two days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Known as "An Artist's Response to Violence," the speech addresses the manner in which musicians might best use their abilities in the aftermath of tragedy.

"This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully and more devotedly than ever before," Bernstein said.
