BEMIDJI -- Authorities on Friday released the name of a Park Rapids man who was killed in a head-on collision on Thursday morning on an icy U.S. Highway 71 in Hubbard County.
Dale Maves, 75, was northbound on Highway 71 driving a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle when he was struck head-on by a 2002 Subaru Legacy, which was southbound on the highway but slid on the icy road into the northbound lane. Road conditions were listed as snowy and icy, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
Maves, who was wearing his seat belt, was killed in the crash, according to Patrol. The crash was reported at about 9:50 a.m. in Guthrie Township in Hubbard County, south of County Road 44. Guthrie Township is about 16 miles south of Bemidji.
Maves was the sole occupant of his vehicle. The driver of the Subaru, 18-year-old Elise Sikes of Hudson, Wis., suffered non-life-threatening injuries; as did passengers Marta Christensen, 18, of Hudson, and Saketh Rajendran, 19, of Brooklyn Park, Minn; however, Rajendran was taken to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minn., according to the Patrol’s report. All three occupants of the Subaru were wearing their seat belts, the report said.
