The 2019 Mathcounts Regional Math competition was held at Northland Community College in Thief River Falls on Friday, Feb. 8 and Fertile Beltrami school on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
The competition was split this year because of bad weather. This event is sponsored locally by the Lake Agassiz Chapter of The Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers.
Nine teams registered, but only eight took part due to severe weather. A total of 64 individuals competed. Trophies were given to teams in the small- and large-school category. For the large schools, Bemidji Middle School was first and Crookston was second. For the small schools, Kittson Central of Hallock was first and Fertile Beltrami was second.
The team from Bemidji Middle school was first overall. Individuals going to state from Bemidji Middle School are Nick Rutio, Moses Son, Will Termont and Grace Werner. Bemidji is coached by Rebecca Rud.
Second place overall was Kittson central from Hallock. Individuals on that team are Aidra Johnson, Ethan Hanson, Brandon Ristad, and Hayden Olsonawski. Kittson Central is coached by Mark Christenson. Will Stromstad also made it to state from Fertile Beltrami, his coach is Maggie Coauette. There is a chance Crookston will go to state as a wild card team. The state meet is in Plymouth on March 8-9.
