Archie LaRose elected Leech Lake chairman with 55.96 percent of votes

Arthur "Archie" LaRose won 55.96 percent of the vote in Tuesday's Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe primary to take the chairmanship from current Chairman George Goggleye Jr.

Arthur "Archie" LaRose won 55.96 percent of the vote in Tuesday's Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe primary to take the chairmanship from current Chairman George Goggleye Jr.

According to former Chairman Eli Hunt, this is the first time in Leech Lake Band history that a chairman has been elected without a runoff election.

Goggleye finished second with 30 percent of the vote.

Vote totals were 1,234 for LaRose and 662 for Goggleye.

Because LaRose won more than 50 percent, no runoff is necessary. LaRose is currently Leech Lake secretary/treasurer.

Goggleye said he is disappointed, but cited his acccomplishments in office, including bringing Leech Lake out of a $6.3 deficit into financial stability.

"When I leave here, I can hold my head high," Goggleye said.

He said he would decide Thursday whether to finish his term or resign.

LaRose didn't return a phone call this morning and he failed to show up for an appointment with a reporter.
