BEMIDJI -- A 20-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder Wednesday evening after a 21-year-old man accidentally fired a 9 mm handgun.

Authorities responded to the incident, which was located in the 1300 block of Averi Circle Northwest, just before 9 p.m. The woman was taken to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center in Bemidji. The parties were outside the home at the time the gun was fired. According to Beltrami County Sheriff Ernie Beitel, there appeared to be both an entry wound and an exit wound to the woman’s right shoulder.

Beitel said the two Bemidji-area residents were discussing the difference between single-stage and two-stage triggers and neglected to clear the weapon beforehand. Beitel said the incident was accidental and no criminal charges are pending.
