ALASKA TOWNSHIP -- Officials say a Bemidji woman died Tuesday night in a rollover crash on Highway 89 while fleeing from law enforcement.
According to a news release from the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a stabbing at the 5600 block of Alps Court NW in Eckles Township. The victim identified Traci Jolynne Cloud, 24, of Bemidji, as his attacker.
After he was attacked, the victim -- a 25-year-old man from Red Lake -- fled to a neighbor’s house; deputies found Cloud outside of the neighbor’s house in her vehicle. When law enforcement arrived she fled “at a high rate of speed” across neighboring yards to the road.
While driving north on state Highway 89, south of Lumberjack Road Northwest in Alaska Township, Cloud left the road, overcorrected, and lost control of her vehicle. She was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car. No one else was in the car at the time of the crash.
Though the news release said that Bemidji and Red Lake ambulance personnel “arrived on scene and determined that Cloud was deceased,” a Minnesota State Patrol report said she was pronounced dead at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.
The stabbing victim was taken to the emergency room at Sanford. His current condition is unknown.
The State Patrol, Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office and the coroner’s office is investigating the crash.
The Red Lake Police Department, Bemidji Police Department, North Air-Care Ambulance, Bemidji Fire Department, Alaska Fire Department, Red Lake Ambulance and Bemidji Ambulance also assisted at the scene.
