BEMIDJI-The Headwaters Science Center is taking on a formal look this weekend to celebrate 25 years in operation and raise funds to keep the organization going.

From 5 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the non-profit will hold its 10th annual E-Cubed Gala, featuring cocktails, music and original entrees by chefs from local restaurants. According to science center officials, the event mixes the art of science and food.

"We really try to make it a fun evening, with live stations with the chefs where people can talk to them," Science Center Director Annie Butler Ricks said. "Usually, when you go out to eat you don't get to talk with people making your food, so it's a unique experience."

The event will take place at the science center, meaning work begins to transform the facility into a formal looking spot the day before.

"On Friday, as soon as we close at 5, we're going to have a crew in here to start moving exhibits around," Butler Ricks said. "We move what we can and set up all the tables, chairs, and stage, so we'll probably be here until about 9."

Along with the chef stations, Saturday's gala will include a silent auction and a flaming dessert show.

Tickets for the gala are $50 and go toward funding the science center. According to Butler Ricks, its a key event in keeping the organization going.

"One third of the science center is funded from community support, and that includes this event, so, it's really important for us to have a bigger event like this once a year," Butler Ricks said. "It also gives us a chance to spend time with our supporters and have a fun evening."

The science center sells a total of 100 tickets for the event to those who aren't sponsors already, leading to an attendance of about 160. Along with those in attendance, Butler Ricks said the science center will also be full thanks to the volunteers.

"It's all volunteer driven," Butler Ricks said. "The chefs donate their time and most of the items are donated for the event, too, which makes it extra special."

The Headwaters Science Center, which sees more than 20,000 visitors annually, is located at 413 Beltrami Ave. NW. Tickets are available at the center or online at www.eventbrite.com .
