Cass Lake man charged with solicitation of a minor

BEMIDJI—A Cass Lake man was arrested Tuesday for solicitation of a minor through electronic communication.

According to court documents, Brandon Wayne Masten, 33, contacted a 14-year-old female by cell phone and then sent her either a photograph or video that was explicit. The document said he also solicited her for sexual contact.

The victim reported the message from Masten to her parents, who, in turn, reported the message to law enforcement.

The Bemidji Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension then used the victim's phone to impersonate the victim while communicating with Masten, according to the documents.

Acting as the 14-year-old, authorities set up a meeting with Masten for Tuesday evening at the Nymore Access in Bemidji. Masten was arrested when he arrived for the meeting, and he confessed to having an explicit conversation with someone who he thought was the 14-year-old, according to the documents. According to the document, Masten said he intended to meet and have sex with the victim.

In addition to the solicitation charge, Masten was charged with fourth-degree DWI.
