The Blackduck Drakes Speech Team kicked off their season Saturday, Jan. 14, at Pequot Lakes, earning sixth place out of 15 teams. Award-winners for the varsity team were Ellie Cleveland, who took second in Great Speeches and Matthew Metzler, second in Informative Speaking. Cleveland also took fourth place in Humor, Jody Bloom was fifth in Creative Expression, and Blackduck had three sixth-place medalists: Courtnee Porath in Serious Drama, Elliot Stillday in Informative Speaking and Abigail Johnson in Serious Prose. Earning an Award of Excellence were Angello Bell in Creative Expression and Logen Patch in Serious Drama. It was a great start to the season for the speech team; head coach Jennifer Parker said that she and her assistant coaches: Kari Slindee, Kim Coborn and Kelly Metzler are anticipating a season that is certain to bring a lot of changes and new experiences. The team is young and growing, which is very exciting, along with returning veteran speakers who have both Section and State appearances and medals to their credit already.
