James Milton Smith Jr., 37, of Redby, died Saturday Oct. 18, 2008, at the Red Lake Indian PHS Hospital in Red Lake.
Traditional funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Redby Community Center in Redby. A wake began yesterday at the Redby Community Center and will continue until the time of service. Burial will be in the Fox Point Cemetery in Redby under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.
The pallbearers will be Kevin Gibbs, David Mountain, Andrew Oakgrove, Chris Oakgrove, Rodney Jackson and Jeremy Potter.
Honorary pallbearers will be his uncles, Donald, Roger, Raleigh, Ronald and Charles Oakgrove.
He was born June 28, 1971, to James Smith Sr. and Janice Oakgrove in Bemidji. He was raised and educated in Minneapolis. He moved to Red Lake and worked as a cook at the Seven Clans Casino in Thief River Falls. He enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his mother of Minneapolis; daughter, Leah Smith of St. Paul; son, Kyle Smith of St. Paul; a grandson; sisters, Dorothy "DJ" Smith of Minneapolis, Lori Smith of Minneapolis, Avis White of Bemidj, Dena White of Ponemah and Lena Aguilar-Vazquez of Minneapolis; and brother, Brent White of Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by his father; grandfather, Lawrence Oakgrove; and an uncle and aunt.
