Jerry Wallace Van Hale Sr., 76, of Bemidji, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home in Bemidji with the Rev. Bill Goodman officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and one hour before the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Frohn Eastside Cemetery in Frohn Township.

Pallbearers will be Leah Van Hale, Scott Bergdahl, Jesse Shank, Rick Van Hale, Jensina Van Hale and Heather Van Hale. Honorary pallbearers will be Ron Tryan, Pat Tryan, Arnold Christensen, John Klow and Will Najjar.

He was born Sept 20, 1931, to Walter and Rosemary (Carlson) Van Hale in St. Cloud, Minn. When he was young, his family moved to International Falls, Minn. After high school, he worked for the Mando Paper Factory in International Falls. He then worked as a gas transport driver, which he did for 32 years, driving for R. L. Giles Inc. and Thorson Construction. He retired in 1988.

He traveled to Mexico, Belize and Hawaii. His true love was the outdoors, and he enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing. This fall, he harvested his fourth bear. His hobbies included working with black Labrador retrievers and homing pigeons, which earned him many championships.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; sons, Jerry (Jackie) Van Hale Jr. of International Falls, Minn., Richard (Heidi) Van Hale of International Falls, Rick (LaVonne) Shank of Gillette, Wyo., Donald (Vickie) Shank of Rogers, Minn.; daughters, Lillian Shank (Wayne) Horn of Medical Lake, Wis., Cindy (Scott Bergdahl) Van Hale of East Grand Forks, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Dick (Ginny) Van Hale of Anoka, Minn. and Keith (Marlene) Van Hale of Mora, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Duane; and son, Terry Van Hale.
