Hurd wins national sandwich contest

Patrice Hurd, of Bemidji, was named the winner of the Open-Face Artistry category in the Brownberry bread “America’s Better Sandwich” contest. Hurd’s sandwich, a Confetti Shrimp Toast with Bean Basil Pate Sandwich, was selected from the 15 finalists in the competition. The contest launched in June and invited consumers to create their favorite sandwich using both great flavor and wholesome nutrition in the following categories: Creative Classics, Breakfast in Bread, Fueling Good, Love, Healthfully and Open-Face Artistry. “Well, they were looking for a real healthy, low-calorie sandwich that still tasted good. So I just put together somethings that had a lot of flavor and some herbs and lime zest. Instead of a mayonnaise based spread, I used cannellini beans and a bread spread to make it healthier,” Hurd said. Hurd was awarded $5,000 for winning the Open-Face Artistry category.
