BEMIDJI -- Due to continued government restrictions First Friday Art Walk activities for May have been canceled.

Though in-person events are canceled, there are several great options for virtual gallery openings around Bemidji.

At Gallery North, Showcase Artist for the month of May is Marion Caroline Reil. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in art from BSU and taught middle school art for ten years. Reil's favorite medium is watercolor, and her favorite subjects are nature and horses, especially performance type horses as she considers them to be “music in motion.”

Curtis Olson is Gallery North's newest member and has been making custom made knives since 1978. He makes full tapered tang hunting knives, usually with blades no longer than four inches. He also makes folding knives and knives of Damascus steel which he makes using his forge and hydraulic press, a release said.

Watermark is holding virtual gallery viewing through May 30, including Schoolcraft Learning Community exhibit, “Portraits in Oil and Chalk Pastel,” featuring the work of fourth and fifth-graders under the instruction of art teacher Jake Anderson. The exhibit was influenced by the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, a neo-expressionist painter in the 1980s. He was best known for his collaboration with pop artist Andy Warhol.

Another gallery still on virtual display is the Kaul Gallery, featuring photography of RJ Kern entitled “The Unchosen Ones.” It will be available to viewers online from through May 30. The theme of how “one isn’t born a winner or loser, but a chooser” will be explored in a series of portraits taken behind the scenes at Minnesota county fairs in 2016.

Watermark will also continue with the virtual exhibit of recent works by master bead artist Thomas Stillday.
