Bemidji Area Community Band wraps up summer concert series

BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji Area Community Band will be wrapping up its summer concert season at 7 p.m. Sunday on the south lawn of Bangsberg Hall at BSU.

BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji Area Community Band will be wrapping up its summer concert season at 7 p.m. Sunday on the south lawn of Bangsberg Hall at BSU.

The band will be under the direction of Fulton Gallagher, professor emeritus in the Music Department at BSU. He received his undergraduate training at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and his doctoral degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, where he was a leading baritone with the Indiana University Opera Theatre. He also completed postdoctoral work at Harvard University.

He has served as chair of the Music Department, dean of Fine Arts and Humanities and director of the Opera Theatre. He founded and directed Opera Night for many years. He also served as musical director for eight years and six years as executive director of the Paul Bunyan Playhouse.

In addition to his musical involvement at BSU, Gallagher has been president of the Faculty Association, president of the Minnesota Music Educators Association and a recipient of many grants and awards including “Distinguished Humanities Scholar” from the Minnesota Humanities Commission, a guest conductor and clinician at many state festivals and programs and has had a major scholarship for vocal students established in his name.

He founded the Choral Hostel program at BSU and also also co-founded the Academy of Lifelong Learning. In 2005, he became founder and director of the American Senior Chorus. He continues his work at the BSU Music Department as an adjunct faculty member.

This last concert will feature multiple music styles, including concert marches, a selection from Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" featuring a guest vocalist, Amanda Boring, selections from "Showboat" also featuring vocalists Boring and Mark Christensen and other very recognizable melodies, according to a release.

Please bring a lawn chair or blanket. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved indoors to BSU's Bangsberg Recital Hall. Security Bank is the sponsor of this week's concert.
