Bemidji Area Church Musicians Recital Series continues
BEMIDJI-Bemidji Area Church Musicians Recital Series will continue with a concert by scholarship recipients, Hannah Allen and Kayla Hewitt at noon Wednesday at Evangelical Free Church, 115 Carr Lake Road SW. The program will include songs by F. Schubert, R. Schumann, S. Donaudy, M. Blitzstein and S. Barber. Allen is a soprano and her accompanist will be Allison Laughlin. Allen has completed one year at Concordia College in Moorhead. She sings in the Concordia Choir and has performed with the Fargo-Moorhead Opera.
Hewitt is enrolled at Bethel University, in St. Paul, where she plays euphonium in the Bethel Band and trumpet in the Jazz Ensemble and Brass Quintet. Her program will include Romance by V. Ewald and Sonata in F by G. Telemann. KaySue Eriksson will accompany her on the piano. A luncheon will follow the concert and a free-will offering will be received at the door which is used for scholarships for college music students from the Bemidji area.
'21st Century Play' performances set
BEMIDJI-The premier of "21st Century Play" by Jeremiah Liend will include performances at 8 p.m. Aug. 14, 15, 21 and 22 in the Black Box theater of the Bangsberg Fine Arts building on the BSU campus, 1500 Birchmont Drive NE. Tickets cost is $15 and are available at Shannon's Art and Soul, Ken K. Thompson Jewelry and Iverson Corner Drug. The production is intended for adult audiences. All performances will be recorded.

Watermark hosts the Artists of Studio 10 in upcoming exhibit
BEMIDJI-Watermark Art Center presents "Transitions" by the Artists of Studio 10 as its next featured exhibit. An opening reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Watermark Art Center, 426 Bemidji Ave. N. Studio 10 is a group of 10 artists from Bemidji and surrounding towns who meet regularly to discuss art, critique their work, share techniques and encourage continued growth as artists. "Transitions" will feature brand new works never before displayed in the Bemidji area, with each artist addressing the concept of transition and change using his or her medium of choice. The exhibit will run through Sept. 26. The Watermark Art Center is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
'Casa Hogar' opening reception at Wild Hare Bistro and Coffeehouse
BEMIDJI-"Casa Hogar" photographs by Brittany Fairbanks will be on display from Aug. 7 to Sept. 1 at Wild Hare Bistro and Coffeehouse, 523 Minnesota Ave. An opening reception will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 7 at Wild Hare Bistro and Coffeehouse. In Mexico "Casa Hogar" means "Children's Home," and deep in the Mexican tropics there is a Children's Home that has also become home to Fairbanks.The photographs in this show are portraits of children she loves and is constantly learning from.
Open stage set for Aug. 7 at RRFS
BEMIDJI-Northwoods Folk Collection Open Stage will offer a chance to share performance art with an attentive, enthusiastic, inter-generational audience at 8 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Rail River Folk School, 303 Railroad St. SW, Suite B. The event will feature a spoken word in honor of Susan Carol Hauser.
Patricia Kness reception set for Aug. 7

Book signing with Sue Doeden set
BEMIDJI-A book signing with Sue Doeden, author of "Homemade with Honey" will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 7 at KD Floral and Gardens, 325 Minnesota Ave. Doeden is a cooking instructor and food writer who currently hosts "Good Food, Good Life 365" on Lakeland Public Television. Her book is the sixth book in the Minnesota Historical Society Press's Northern Plate series, celebrating the bounty of the Upper Midwest by focusing on a single ingredient, exploring its historical uses as well as culinary applications across a range of dishes.
'Meet the Sculptor Talks' continues
BEMIDJI-The Bemidji Sculpture Walk will present a series of "Meet the Sculptor Talks" as part of the First Friday Art Walk nights in Bemidji.The second featured sculptor will be Native American artist Simon Zornes, of Zerkel, Minn. from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 7 in the Lake Bemidji room at Northwest Minnesota Foundation, 201 Third Street NW. Using native rock and wood, Zornes creates powerful images expressive of his Anishinaabeg heritage.
Artist reception with Kathy Gustafson
BEMIDJI-Kathy Gustafson, a sculptor, will be exhibiting her metal art from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW. Gustafson received a grant to study new materials and methods from the Region 2 Arts Council. This event is to celebrate and share what she has learned so far. She will be there to present her work and answer questions. This event is free and open to the public.
