NELL to present Curtis and Loretta in concert
FOSSTON-Northern Exposure in Lifelong Learning presents Curtis and Loretta in concert at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, at the Fosston Library and Art Center, 403 Foss Ave. N. The concert is free and open to the public.
Experience original folk songs from husband-and-wife duo, Curtis and Loretta. Together, they deliver beautiful harmonies and play several instruments, including folk harp, guitars, mandocello and banjo, a release said. Their latest album, "When There's Good to Be Done," features story-songs of Minnesota's unsung heroes.
Northern Artist Association Meeting

Senior Center to hold folk music concert
BEMIDJI-The Senior Activity Center will be hosting a folk music concert at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, at the center, 216 Third St. NW. The concert will feature original folk songs from husband and wife duo, Curtis and Loretta. Together they deliver beautiful harmonies and play several instruments, including folk harp, guitars, mandocello and banjo. The music features story-songs of Minnesota's unsung heroes, a release said. This activity is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Beltrami Area Arts Endowment, a component of the Northwest Minnesota Foundation. There is no cost to attend. Ziigwan Fiber, Fabric and Food Marketplace
BEMIDJI-Northwest Indian Community Development Center is hosting its first Ziigwan (Spring) Fiber, Fabric and Food Marketplace. The event will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 26, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at the center, 1819 Bemidji Ave. N.
Everyone is welcome to see the art on display, including black ash baskets and earrings, birch bark art, star quilts, bead work, fiber art, moccasins, regalia, fabric art and more. A demonstration will be done throughout both days on roach making, quill work, moccasin making, finger weaving, loom weaving, needle felting, wet felting. White Earth Tribal College Extension will be onsite with their new bean growing project. They are looking for growers to help grow endangered bean species. In honor of Earth Day, they will have composting 101 with red wigglers and making laundry soap. There will also be displays on recycling and more. Food will be available for attendees both days.
KAXE/KBXE to train volunteers to host live radio
BEMIDJI-Northern Community Radio KAXE/KBXE will hold its biannual volunteer training for on-air hosts from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, April 29, at the KBXE Studio in Bemidji, 305 America Ave. NW. Interested volunteers take their first stop toward hosting a live radio program.
At the training, potential volunteers learn the history of the station, now in its 43rd year as the first rural community radio station in the United States. Hosts will hear about the format, loosely based on the Winnipeg Folk Festival lineup of folk, rock, blues, jazz and world music. They'll also learn some of the basic rules of public radio, learn about scheduling, and visit the two extensive libraries including thousands of CDs and a strong collection of vinyl.

After the training, volunteers will sit in with experienced hosts to get their hands-on training before taking the controls on their own. Those who attend the Bemidji training can host from either KBXE in Bemidji or KAXE in Grand Rapids.

Region 2 Arts Council to host Biennial Plan Cycle
BEMIDJI-The Region 2 Arts Council is hosting a public presentation for input on their next Biennial Plan Cycle for fiscal years 2020 and 2021. The presentation is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6, in Watermark Art Center's Education Room, 505 Bemidji Ave. N.
The public is invited to join and comment as Region 2 Arts Council staff present a draft of the Biennial Plan, which includes information on grant and non-grant programs and services, grant deadlines, planned outcomes, strategies for implementation and evaluation measures. Region 2 board and staff members have developed each element of the plan over the course of the year with input from surveys, focus groups, and listening sessions in each of Region 2's five counties. This input included expressed needs offered by artists, arts organizations, and arts-interested members of the public.
A draft of the plan will be available on the Region 2 website at https://r2arts.org/ for public viewing by May 2.

Connecting With Kids Through Art 2019

BEMIDJI-Gallery North recently announced class listings for homeschooled and alternative learning children. The classes are free to participants and are offered by local Gallery North artists. Call or stop by Gallery North, 310 Fourth St. NW, to sign up for these classes.
All classes are for ages 10 and older; class is limited to 10 students.
April 23: Alcohol Ink with Mary Morton from 1 to 3 p.m. Using the versatility of alcohol ink, create a one of a kind alcohol ink tile as well as a piece of jewelry using an ordinary industrial washer.
April 25: Greeting Cards with Kathy Sanders from 1 to 3 p.m. Design a unique greeting card using Micron pens and watercolor pencils, or mat and frame for a 5"x7" wall art.
April 30: Reverse Painting on Glass with Marion Caroline from 10 a.m. to noon. The class will be reverse painting on glass. Students will bring a 8x10" inch frame with glass and a paper copy (8x10") of the image they wish to paint.
Theater Day Camp returns in June
BEMIDJI-The city of Bemidji will host a Theater Day Camp June 3-14. This half-day camp will run from 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The camp is put on in collaboration with Bemidji Community Theater. There are four levels campers can pick from based off of their performance experience and interest. Level 1: Skill Building & Performance: Campers will work on basic theater skills which include acting, singing and dancing. Level 2: Advanced Performance Camp: Campers will audition for roles and produce a more challenging performance. Out of the Box: Campers will write their own script as well as perform their original play at the end of camp. Tech Camp: For those campers who want to learn about the behind the scenes. Campers will participate in scenic painting, costuming and stage combat. Each level will have a final performance for families and friends. The location is to be determined. Cost is $80 per participant.
Watermark seeks art for water-themed exhibit

BEMIDJI, MN - Watermark Art Center is seeking artists of all mediums to submit work for an upcoming group exhibition. "Nibikaang - From the Water" will celebrate the importance of water in our everyday life. The premise of the exhibit is to have artists living within the Mississippi Watershed, Great Lakes or Red River of the North submit work about their relationship to water: interactions, observations, history, concerns, etc.
Rivers and watersheds are a metaphor for how we are all connected. This exhibit will bring together diverse perspectives and shared experiences that have been formed in this region, where water is so fundamental to our way of life.
"Water is important to all of us and we are proud that both Native and non-Native organizations of this region have taken a lead in matters concerning our waters," said Karen Goulet, Miikanan Gallery Program Director at Watermark Art Center, in a release. "We know there are many exceptionally talented people who live in places because of their love and connection to water. We encourage artist who wants to remind people about the importance and value of our waterways to submit work."
Jurying the exhibit will be two regional artists. Aaron Spangler and Hillary Kempenich are both award-winning artists who live and work in places influenced by water. Spangler is an internationally-recognized sculptor and printmaker currently living in Park Rapids; his work has been shown in prominent galleries throughout the country, including the Walker Art Center. Award winning artist Hillary Kempenich, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, currently resides in Grand Forks. Kempenich is an established studio artist and advocate for the arts, education, social justice and Native issues.
Submissions for "Nibikaang - From the Water" will be accepted online only. To enter, go to www.watermarkartcenter.org . Deadline to submit work is Friday, April 19. There is no submission fee to enter.
