BEMIDJI-Sanford Bemidji and Bemidji Rotary have partnered to host the Fourth Annual Blood Screening event this week to benefit the Paul Bunyan Inclusive Playground.

The screening continues from 7 to 10 a.m. Thursday and Friday at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center in the east lobby. The cost of the blood screening is $35.

The test includes screenings for: cholesterol (blood lipids), triglyceride (blood fats), high density lipoproteins (HDL), low density lipoproteins (LDL), glucose (blood sugar), creatinine, hemoglobin, white blood count and liver (ALT).

"It's good to have your blood screened on a regular basis either if you're on medications or have underlying diseases to monitor that but also sometimes just to see how you're doing," said Todd Glen, supervisor at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center's laboratory. "We may pick up something that you didn't realize was going on and it gives an opportunity for you to have those conversations with your physician to get treatment for that."

"We've been using the proceeds to go toward the Paul Bunyan Inclusive Playground for the last four years to fulfill a $100,000 commitment that we made to the city to help fund the playground and this should be our final payment," said Rotarian Marilyn Miller.

The Paul Bunyan Inclusive Playground opened in 2016 at the Bemidji Waterfront and allows people with varying abilities the opportunity to play together.

Miller said Bemidji Rotary and Sanford Health plan to continue the partnership in the future, but with a new project.

Businesses are encouraged to purchase advance vouchers to support their employees having their blood tested. To purchase vouchers or for more information, call Miller at (218) 766-8174.

Participants should fast, with the exception of water, between nine and 12 hours before the test. To receive test results the same day, participants can sign up for My Sanford Chart at mysanfordchart.org.
