MINNEAPOLIS—A really, really big deal, a big deal last year, and a couple of big deals from years ago are the core of Hennepin Theatre Trust's 2018-19 "Broadway on Hennepin" season.
The really, really big deal is — of course — the regional debut of the blockbuster musical "Hamilton." While it's no secret that a touring production of the award-winning "Hamilton" is part of the Minneapolis theater season, the dates are official with today's announcement. "Hamilton" kicks off the season at the Orpheum and runs for six weeks, Aug. 29-Oct. 7.
Last year's big deal on Broadway, "Dear Evan Hansen," is part of the season. The winner of six 2017 Tony Awards, including best musical, is on stage at the Orpheum from May 28 to June 9, 2019.
And remember when "The Book of Mormon" was a big deal a few years ago? Or "Les Miserables" a few years before that? "Fiddler on the Roof" or "Hello Dolly" even more years before that? If they've grown to be your favorites, they'll be back in Minneapolis in the 2018-19 season. The national tour of "Dolly" will feature Tony Award-winning Broadway legend Betty Buckley.
The Broadway season also features the Minnesota premieres of "Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," March 6-17, 2019; "A Bronx Tale," Feb. 19-24; "On Your Feet," Jan. 22-27, 2019; and "The Play That Goes Wrong," May 7-12, 2019. Also returning are "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" and "Rock of Ages."
But the big ticket is "Hamilton." Season ticket holders have until March 12 to renew their 2017-18 subscriptions and have those seats for "Hamilton" and the other shows in the newly announced season. New subscriptions for the 2018-19 season go on sale at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Hennepin Theatre Trust media relations manager Dale Stark says that there will be some tickets available when single tickets go on sale at a later date.
