George R. McDowell, 67
George R. McDowell, 67, of Duluth, Minn., formerly of Bemidji, died on Thursday April 30, 2009.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Cremation Society, 4100 Grand Ave. Duluth. A visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. Sunday and for one hour prior to the service at the Cremation Society.
He was born Nov. 13, 1941, to Bob and Mitzi McDowell in Duluth. He graduated from Denfeld High School and the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He served in the U.S. Army and completed his tour of duty as a Captain in Khon Kaen, Thailand. He married Janet Pliml in 1969, and they lived in Duluth for a time, before moving to Bemidji, where he was director of Food Service at Bemidji State University and Bemidji Public Schools. He and his wife returned to Duluth, where he owned and operated the Highway Host Restaurant. He also served as an agent for Prudential Insurance and as a team member at Puglisi's Gun Emporium. He played football and ran track in Denfield. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and reading. He was a member of the Duluth Curling Club and Wednesday Night Golf.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years; son, Jon of Duluth; daughter, Christine (Aaron) Pletcher of Ramsey, Minn.; a granddaughter; sister, Geri (Marv) Schmid of Plymouth, Minn.; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Jan McDowell, for future designation.
