Sanford Health welcomes Kevin Murphy, MD, to the physical medicine and rehabilitation team

Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota welcomes Kevin Murphy, MD, to the physical medicine and rehabilitation team at Sanford Bemidji. Dr. Murphy received his undergraduate from the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. He attended medical school at the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, MN. Dr. Murphy completed a two year internship in the department of general surgery followed by a residency program in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, MN.
After graduating from Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, he went on to complete a fellowship in Pediatric Rehabilitation with the Children’s Hospital of Northern California in Oakland, CA. Dr. Murphy is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with a pediatric rehabilitation medicine subspecialty.
Prior to joining Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota, Dr. Murphy served in the Minnesota Army National Guard for 24 years. As a full bird colonel and the 34th Infantry Division Surgeon, he has served four military tours in the combat theater of Iraq.
He has worked in rehabilitative medicine for over 30 years as a rehabilitative physician at Duluth Clinic/St. Mary’s (1990-1998), medical director of the department of pediatric rehabilitation at the Polinsky Medical Rehabilitation Center in Duluth, MN (1990-1998), medical director at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare North Clinics in Duluth, MN (2000-2019), and medical director of pediatric rehabilitation services for Sanford Health in Bismarck, ND (1990-present).
In addition to the care he has provided, Dr. Murphy was a USA team physician for the National Cerebral Palsy Olympics (1989), Paralympic Games (1992 Barcelona Spain & 1996 Atlanta Georgia) and the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO (1995). He is currently a board director for the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (2015-present) and co-founder and leader with the Dr. Gabrielle E. Molnar Research and Education fund; Foundation of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (2012-present). Presently, he is the lead editor for the Textbook of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine, sixth edition, Demos Medical with a publication date anticipated of August 2020.
Dr. Murphy is available for referrals specializing in the rehabilitation of children with physical disabilities and adults with childhood onset conditions. The practice has a core emphasis on musculoskeletal, neurologic, neuromuscular and genetic impairments with a focus on improving functional performance in all environments.

In his spare time, he enjoys scuba diving, hiking, reading and the martial arts. Dr. Murphy finds most of his enjoyment from spending time with his family, including his wife of 38 years Camille, and in their island home on Rainy Lake.
