BEMIDJI — The Beltrami County Historical Society has announced the opening of its first special exhibit of 2022: "Beltrami County Women in Winter Sports," featuring women athletes of various team and individual sports.
Open now through mid-March, the exhibit displays hundreds of artifacts donated and on loan from Beltrami County women athletes and their families, including photographs, awards, equipment, uniforms and more, a release said.
The exhibit highlights women’s contributions and achievements across a variety of sports, including basketball, biathlon, cheerleading, cross-country skiing, curling, downhill skiing, figure skating, fishing, hockey, Nordic skating, sled dog racing and speed skating.
“Women represented here include state record holders, world champions and Olympians, whose discipline, teamwork, experience and determination not only earned title and acclaim but broke barriers and laid foundations for the future women athletes, scholars and leaders in our community,” Emily Thabes, BCHS executive director, said in the release. “The artifacts share an evolving history of women’s sports from a variety of perspectives. We are honored to highlight these women’s stories and accomplishments in their respective arenas.”
The exhibit is on display from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday in the Beltrami County History Center’s newly renovated East Gallery, located at 130 Minnesota Ave. South.
