BEMIDJI — The Beltrami County Historical Society will host "To Remember and Honor: Memorial Day with the Historical Society" with three events leading up to Memorial Day.
Each event will be held at 2 p.m. May 24-26, at the Beltrami County History Center, 130 Minnesota Ave. SW.
Tuesday, May 24 author and Bemidji State University professor Mike Herbert will share his book "Leaving Campus: A World War II Epitaph," about the students of Bemidji State Teachers College who enlisted in military service in World War II and lost their lives in service to their country. Copies may be purchased at the History Center gift shop and signed at the event.
Wednesday, May 25 there will be a viewing of Lakeland Public Television’s new segment "Common Ground: Captain John Wheeler." Captain Wheeler was a decorated war hero who was a prisoner of war in the Philippines and perished while imprisoned on a hell ship. This segment honors his life as a Minnesotan and decorated career soldier.
Thursday, May 26 historian Lois Jenkins and Executive Director Emily Thabes will share a presentation about Decoration Day (D-Day) and how traditions from that event have shaped Memorial Day. Learn about our local cemeteries, locating gravesites, and caring for gravesites. American flags appropriate for grave markers will be distributed at the presentation.

Additionally, the History Center will offer free admission for Gold Star families from Wednesday, May 25, through Saturday, May 28.
The History Center will extend its hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday beginning May 25.
The museum will be closed in honor of Memorial Day on Monday, May 30, and reopen Wednesday, June 1.
All programs will occur at the Beltrami County History Center 130 Minnesota Ave. SW, Bemidji.
Programs are free, and seating for all programs is first-come, first-serve.
