Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota welcomes Alexander Covington, MD, to the radiology and vascular teams at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.
Dr. Covington, attended undergraduate school at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA. He then took part in a basic core medical sciences post-baccalaureate program at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, before completing medical school with the same university.
Continuing his education, Dr. Covington took part in the radiology residency program at the University of New Mexico. During which time, he also earned his executive master’s in business administration before continuing on to his fellowship in interventional radiology, also with the University of New Mexico.
Working alongside experts in the field of interventional radiology, Dr. Covington gained valued experience at the San Juan Regional Medical Center and the Radiology Partners Phoenix, in Farmington, NM, and Phoenix, AZ, respectively, before joining the radiology and vascular teams in Bemidji.
As an interventional and vascular radiologist, Dr. Covington utilizes minimally-invasive image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system. He is able to perform a range of specialized imaging procedures* including, but not limited to, needle biopsies, needle aspiration/drainage, paracentesis and thoracentesis, gastrostomy and nephrostomy tube placements, port placements, dialysis access and fistula interventions, lumbar punctures, uterine fibroid embolizations, peripheral arterial disease (PAD) intervention, and interventional oncology.
“My goal when diagnosing and treating patients is to provide targeted treatment options using the least invasive techniques as possible,” said Dr. Covington. “Often, I take a collaborative approach with my colleagues, especially for difficult or challenging situations, to minimize risk and provide the best outcome for our patients.”
Actively collaborating with different departments and providers at the hospital, Dr. Covington is also active at home. In addition to keeping up with his three rambunctious dogs—a whippet, a bansenji, and a Parson Russell terrier—Dr. Covington also enjoys running and biking every chance he gets. Between his pups and his practice, his most favorite thing to do is stepping away to spend quality time with his fiancé.
